When inhaled solvents have a similar effect as alcohol. They make
the user feel relaxed, happy and dizzy. Solvents are sniffed from
a cloth, sleeve or plastic bag or sprayed directly into mouth (this
is the most dangerous way of taking them as it can lead to instant
death).
Solvents are most commonly used by young people (aged 11 – 16).
Users often have red rash, sores or scabs around nose and/or mouth.
Can make users feel dreamy, dizzy and giggly and lose concentration.
The effects don’t last very long so some people use more and more
(this is really dangerous as well).
Most common risks are feeling sick, being sick and passing out.
Solvent use is very risky and causes about 1 young person each
week to die.
Solvent use can cause throat swelling so breathing is difficult,
and it slows down people’s heart. Long-term use can lead to brain,
liver and kidney damage.
