Drug Info - Amphetamines

Other names
billy, Dexedrine, phet, speed, whizz.

Amphetamine is usually a pink, white or yellow powder sold in grams. It sometimes comes as a tablet. It is usually swallowed. Some people sniff it up their nose but is has a really horrible taste. Amphetamines are also sometimes injected.

It is a stimulant drug so it keeps people awake, sometimes for hours and hours which can be REALLY annoying. It also stops people from feeling hungry (which is not healthy and DEFINITELY not a good way to try and lose weight!!). Users can become very agitated and fidgety. They can also become very talkative and get a very dry mouth.

Amphetamine can be physically addictive.

The risks include overdose (especially if it is injected) heart failure (it puts strain on the heart by forcing it to beat faster) If you use amphetamines regularly it can cause anxiety, depression, irritability and aggression as well as mental illness such as psychosis (seeing things, hearing things that aren’t there) and paranoid feelings – thinking that everyone hates you, that they are all talking about you – and sometimes you believe people are trying to hurt you.

The comedown (after effects) can be harsh and can cause people to feel very tired and depressed. This can last for a number of days.
